Main antagonist of the second part of the anime Naruto , the feared organization Akatsuki is characterized by iconic characters, a complex story and twists that took the breath of a lot of fans.
Nagato was one of the creators of the Akatsuki group , alongside Konan and Yahiko. The group’s initial goal, in its first formation, was to combat the tyranny and oppression that the Amegakure village was being subjected to during the Third Shinobi World War.
Before founding the organization, the three were known as the Ame Orphans , children whose parents died in the Second Shenobi World War. Found by Jiraya, they received care and training for three years, and gained a reputation for killing anyone who opposed them.
As Akatsuke gained strength, Amegakure’s political leader Hanzo felt threatened and tried to stop them. He kidnapped Konan and demanded that Nagato kill his friend and then Akatsuki leader Yahiko in exchange for Konan’s freedom. To prevent Nagato from having to make that decision, Yahiko jumped on his companion’s gun, killing himself to save Konan.
Nagato’s Transformation and the Six Paths of Pain
The ensuing battle and rescuing Konan cost Nagato the movement of his legs, scorched by Hanzo’s explosive seals. In the midst of all this, he awakened his Rinnegan and used Summoning: Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, a technique through which he killed all of Hanzo’s men. The technique, however, had a side effect that impaled Nagato with several chakra stakes.
From this side effect, Nagato developed the Six Paths of Pain technique , with which he used his Rinnegan to pierce the corpses of six warriors, then being able to manipulate them as if they were his own body. One of them is Yahiko’s body, which has come to represent the Deva Path.
Although he can use all six bodies at once, Nagato usually assumes the physical identity of Yahiko’s body. He has since identified himself as Pain. When younger, Nagato was sensitive, insecure, scared, and traumatized at just the thought of having to kill other people. Like Pain, however, his personality changed, and he became more calm, distant, and serious.
Akatsuki’s New Goal
After Yahiko’s death, Nagato takes over the leadership of Akatsuki as Pain. The group’s objective, since then, was no longer to guarantee peace, but to achieve world domination . To do so, they gathered the tailed beasts (Beasts with Tails) to use their powers to start wars. Soon after, they used the new formation of mercenary ninjas to end the war. This guaranteed reputation and payment, which caused some villages to collapse financially.
Pain’s lunatic plan was to make Akatsuki the only major shinobi force in existence, capable of creating a kinjutsu – with tailed beast chakra – strong enough to defeat a war in minutes. That way, through fear, there would be peace. Under Pain’s command, the second Akatsuki formation came to seal seven of the nine tailed beasts before the Fourth Shinobi World War.
By possessing Madara Uchiha’s eyes and Senju’s genes, Nagato was able to use the legendary Rinnegan, a dōjutsu that Rikudō Sennin, the world’s first shinobi and founder of ninjutsu, possessed. This made it possible for Nagato to learn to master all five basic nature transformations as a child, something unprecedented.
It was also through the Rinnegan that Nagato was able to develop the Six Paths of Pain technique. With this technique, he is able to control six different bodies. Each of these bodies represents a path and has a specific power:
- Deva Path: Manipulation of attractive and repulsive forces;
- Asura Path: Creation of mechanical limbs, weapons and armor;
- Human Path: Who has the ability to remove almar and read minds;
- Animal Path: Able to summon various creatures;
- Preta Path : With the ability to absorb chakra;
- Naraka Path: Can summon and control the King of Hell;
- Outer Path: 7th path, it is Nagato himself, who rules over life and death.
Konan is the third member of the group that became known as the “Orphans of Ame” (three children whose parents died in World War II Kenochi). She trained with Jiraya, alongside her friends Nagato and Yahiko, and founded Akatsuki with them, integrating the 1st and 2nd formations.
Intelligent and stoic, she stood by Nagato’s side despite not agreeing with all of his actions, although she embraced the ultimate goal of achieving peace. Able to read emotions in him even after he became Pain, Konan trusted his judgment, and that held true when…
…he trusted that Naruto Uzumaki knew the best way to achieve world peace, and sacrificed himself to resurrect all the lives that had been lost in the Akatsuki invasions. Since then, Konan has fiercely protected Naruto.
Konan ends up becoming the leader of the Amegakure village.
Kunoichi rank S, Konan has a natural talent for origami, developing various techniques for which she makes use of paper.
- Dance of the Shikigami: Konan transforms her body and clothes into thousands of sheets of paper, controlling them as she wants, whether making them lighter and more aerodynamic to travel distances, turning them into weapons, or suffocating enemies by covering them. of paper.
- Paper Clones: Clones created through paper can fight in your stead.
- God Person Role Technique: Konan’s most powerful jutsu, the technique gathers 600 billion explosive seals whose explosion – which can last up to ten minutes – is capable of splitting a lake.
A prodigy of Konohagakure’s Uchiha clan, Itachi became an internationally wanted criminal after murdering every member of his clan , with the exception of his younger brother Sasuke. The young man joined the second formation of Akatsuki.
In this period, the objective of the organization, now under the leadership of Pain, had changed. Although they still sought world peace, the means by which they tried to achieve it were at best contradictory. With mercenary ninja as members, Akatsuki secretly provoked wars in different villages, just to “save” the villages, receive payment and gain reputation.
Pain’s intention, however, was to unite all the Tailed Beasts to form a shinobi force so powerful that enemies would be afraid to start wars, which could lead the country to achieve peace. Itachi followed Pain’s side into the Fourth Shinobi World War.
Itachi’s Revelation in the Fourth War
During the Fourth Shinobi World War, Itachi turns against Akatsuki’s plans. He reveals that his primary goal has always been to protect Konoha and Sasuke. The decision to annihilate the Uchiha clan, even, was to protect the country and his younger brother from the possible consequences of the coup that his family wanted to carry out.
Thinking he would be guiding Sasuke down a better path as a ninja, Itachi creates his villain persona. His entry into Akatsuki was even to maintain that image, and to maintain his vigilance over the organization in order to protect Konoha .
During the war, Itachi lets Naruto deal with Pain and goes to fight alongside Sasuke to stop Kabuto. At one point, he relays his memories to his brother to explain why he did everything he did.
Ninja prodigy, Itachi has always demonstrated great skill in taijutsu. Some of his powers were:
- Ninjutsu: His ninjutsu allowed him to summon crows, which he could use to fight opponents in different ways.
- Shurikenjutsu: Technique of throwing weapons like shuriken (to which Itachi could add fire), kunai and senbon by surprise.
- Fire Release: Itachi mastered the Great Fireball Technique.
- Water Release: Able to use the Water Dragon Projectile Technique.
- Genjutsu: Itachi can envelop opponents in extremely realistic illusions. These illusions can still be used to share information.
- Mangekyō Sharingan: With his left eye, Itachi can use Tsukuyomi, a genjutsu capable of trapping the enemy’s mind in the world of illusions. Already with the right, he is able to use Amaterasu, through which he burns anything he looks at.
One of the most mysterious members of Akatsuki, Tobi was always seen wearing an orange mask with spiral patterns that completely covered his face. He was accepted into the organization to replace Sasori and be Deidara’s new partner.
He accompanied the group until the Fourth Shinobi World War, when his identity was finally revealed. For this reason, information about Tobi’s identity and her powers are spoilers, revealed below in case the reader decides to check it out.
During the Fourth Shinobi World War, Tobi finally reveals his true identity, surprising everyone present: he was Obito Uchiha .
When younger, Obito was known for his kindness. At this time, his dream was to save the world and become Hokage. Although his ideals and principles were very similar to Naruto’s, he unfortunately ended up taking a different path. Motivated by the destruction of his idealism following the death of the woman he loved, he succumbed to the Curse of Hatred that accompanied the Uchiha clan.
Obito was presumed dead after the Third Shinobi World War. However, he was saved by Madara Uchiha, who trained him as a successor. Madara passed him the Eye of the Moon Plan, a world domination plan that intended to use tailed beast chakras in conjunction with the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, to recreate the Ten-Tails, the embodiment of Kaguya Ōtsutsuki.
To achieve this, Obito/Tobi manipulated the Akatsuki members from the start. And his strategems ended up causing the Fourth Shinobi World War. During the war, Obito was able to develop his own Six Paths of Pain. However, he used the bodies of deceased jinchūriki (humans who had beasts with tails sealed in them). At the end of the war, Obito realized he had gone the wrong way and sacrificed himself to help save the world from everything he had caused.
In his childhood and youth, Obito displayed average powers. However, under Madara’s guidance, he became an extremely powerful warrior, able to fight Naruto, Killer B, Guy, and Kakashi at the same time.
After being seriously injured during a mission to Kusagakure, Obito was taken care of by Madara, who coated him in the same substance that White Zetsus are made of. With this, Obito’s chakra reserves grew, and he was able to take advantage of Harishama Senju’s DNA. Fast healing ability, ability to replace limbs and ability to use Wood Release have also been gained.
In addition to using the Uchiha clan’s natural Fire Release, Obito could use the technique along with his Mangekyō Sharingan to create Fire Release: Wild Dance of the Explosive Wave. The Mangekyō Sharingan, in turn, enables him to create a kind of entrance to another dimensional space, where he can transport himself.
Zetsu is the being originated from the union of White Zetsu and Black Zetsu . White Zetsu is a human artificially created from the DNA of Hashirama Senju, founder of Konoha alongside Madara Uchida and first Hokage. Black Zetsu was created by Kaguya Ōtsutsuki for the sole purpose of ensuring his own rebirth.
For that reason, the serious and dutiful Black Zetsu had his loyalty solely to Kaguya. For a long time, he feigned loyalty to Madara, while actually viewing anyone below him in power as completely useless. His goal, even in Akatsuki, was to influence the shinobi world to enable Kaguya’s rebirth.
In Akatsuki, Zetsu’s role was to spy and gather information, as well as being tasked with eating the bodies of any members who were killed, to prevent their secrets from being discovered. Zetsu was also responsible for retrieving rings from dead limbs.
Black Zetsu has the ability to bond with other people, control their bodies, and even use their abilities. Therefore, his range of powers varies according to the opponents he has access to. He is also able to record the events he watches and show those memories to anyone he wants.
On the other hand, White Zetsu , having its genetic material almost identical to that of Hashirama Senju, is capable of using Wood Release, but at a weaker level than the first Hokage.
Like Zetsu , the duo used Ephemeral ninjutsu, whereby they were able to merge with the earth and thus travel great distances with great speed.
Originally from Iwagakure, Deidara was an S-rank missing-nin. When he was younger, he dedicated his life to helping rebels in different countries. His reputation reached the members of the second Akatsuki formation, which led Deidara to receive an invitation to join the organization directly from Itachi Uchiha, Kisame Hoshigaki, and Sasori, under Pain’s orders.
Proud and vain of his artistic fighting techniques, he harbored a great hatred for Itachi Uchiha and Sasuke Uchiha. This anger is due to the fact that both do not show emotion towards their art, and because they both possess the Sharingan, considered by Deidara to be a more powerful art than his.
Deidara’s abilities were widely recognized within Akatsuki, and by Pain himself. Her powers included kinjutsu, which allowed her to create special mouths on her hands and chest. In addition, it had its explosive clay, which could be molded as its user wanted. Explosives for ranged attacks, clones of himself and raising birds for transport were among the resources Deidara was able to acquire through his clay.
Due to a childhood without the love of his own parents, Sasori grew up as a sad young man and gradually became an emotionless person. The love for art, which he learned from his grandmother, he also shared with Deidara, being his first partner in Akatsuki.
Fascinated by puppet theater, he had the ambition, for a long time, to become a puppet himself, seeing in art something to be left for the future. Gradually, he was in fact achieving this, converting his body into a kind of human puppet, to maintain his physique and his capabilities, equipping himself with weapons and different battle resources.
Initially, he was paired with Orochimaru, which changed after the latter’s departure, who still tried to steal Itachi Uchiha’s body, but failed.
Extremely powerful, Sasori had more than 300 dolls in his personal collection. Considered a master puppeteer, Sasori had great skill in long-distance combat and his puppets were feared on the battlefield.
In addition to the puppets he created himself, Sasori was able to control people to live as one of his puppets, as long as he managed to weaken them enough. That way, he could gain access to the abilities of the people he controlled.
Like Tsunade and Jiraya, Orochimaru was one of Konohagakure’s Legendary Sannin. However, the unethical experiments he began to do on other people to achieve his long-awaited immortality caused him to be persecuted.
Orochimaru defected from Konoha and went on a quest to conquer eternal life, in order to have time to learn all the secrets of the world. Shortly after leaving the country, he joined the second formation of Akatsuki, already as a criminal organization. Although he was still Sasori’s partner, his goal in the group was to obtain the Sharingan by stealing Itachi Uchiha’s body. After his plan failed, he abandoned the team.
Despite fueling a great anger towards his home village, this feeling still didn’t compare to the hatred he felt for his former Akatsuki colleagues.
Orochimaru is one of the most powerful shinobi in history. The experiments he performed on his own body, in pursuit of immortality, yielded him superhuman stamina, speed, and strength. His transformations reached the extreme where he managed to take the form of a large white snake composed of several smaller snakes.
Able to use various ninjutsu, he can still use all five nature transformations and Yin and Yang Release. His affinity with snakes allowed him to develop different attacks, such as summoning giant snakes.
Originally from Yugakure, Hidan is an S-rank missing-nin who has stood out as one of the most disrespectful characters in both anime and Akatsuki. He constantly complained and cursed at everyone. He had no respect even for their leader, Pain. He had great contempt for his partner in the organization, Kakuzu, but fought well alongside him, and worried when he almost accidentally killed him.
Sadistic, he took pleasure in killing in the most painful way he could imagine, and saw murder as a religious vocation. With an air of insanity, he was extremely spiteful and vindictive.
As a result of his extensive experience with jutsu in the Jashin religion, Hidan achieved a semi-immortality, resisting any type of injuries in battle, but could still suffer from a lack of nutrients.
In addition to being extremely skilled in taijutsu with his Triple Scythe, Hidan is capable of performing the terrible Jashin Ritual. Through this technique, for which he draws the Jashin symbol on the ground using the opponent’s blood, he creates a bond with his opponent’s body, using his own body as a kind of voodoo. That is, everything he does to his body – including painful and deadly wounds – the enemy will feel it too.
Born in Takigakure, Kakuzu was a loyal elite ninja. He risked his life in the quest to kill Hashirama Senju, the first Hokage, but he did not achieve his goal. For this reason, he ended up being punished, humiliated and imprisoned in his village. Disgusted by the unjust punishments, he escaped from prison, murdered the village elders and stole their hearts. He would later use this technique of stealing hearts with his next victims as well, to extend his lifespan.
During his time in Akatsuki, Kakuzu was Hidan’s partner. The dislike and disrespect between the two were constant, yet their fighting styles and skills complemented each other perfectly on the battlefield.
Extremely greedy, enraged and violent, he always sought to choose his missions according to the greatest financial gain they offered. However, he was cautious in battle and respected Pain’s orders.
Kakuzu defeated his opponents with little difficulty. In addition to his skill in taijutsu, he was able to use techniques with the five elements. The hearts he stole from his victims even earned him these various elemental affinities, in addition to a large amount of chakra.
The ninja still used the hearts individually, releasing the organs of his body so that each one formed a monstrous body with a face that he hid with a mask. Each of them could unleash extremely powerful elemental chakra blasts.
With a body made up of hundreds of threads and lines, Kakuzu was able to separate his body parts as he wished, being able to use them in ranged attacks. He also uses his segments to pierce enemies and steal organs. Usually with five hearts, he needs to “be killed” five times to actually die.
S-rank Nikegin, Kisame was known in Kirigakure as the Monster of the Hidden Mist. He was one of the Seven Swordsmen of the Mist in his village, until he joined Akatsuki, where he partnered with Itachi Uchiha and stood out as one of the strongest members of the organization.
He had great respect for Itachi, followed his directions and always consulted him. Cruel and violent, he had no problem mutilating his victims, whether to torture them or simply out of convenience.
Traumatized by the betrayal of his own master, when he was part of the Secret Intelligence Squad, Kisame believed that keeping secrets is even more important than saving lives. For this reason, he commits suicide when he is captured, to prevent anyone from getting any information from him.
With great talent in taijutsu, Kisame preferred direct physical combat, in which he demonstrated great speed and physical strength. Still, he had a monstrous amount of chakra, comparable to the power of the Nine-Tailed Fox.
A powerful swordsman, Kisame had as his signature weapon the sword Samehada , a sentient being capable of detecting and absorbing chakra. He was also able to fully merge with the sword, greatly increasing his power and gaining a shark-like appearance, as well as gills that allowed him to breathe underwater.
Itachi’s first partner in Akatsuki – shortly after the Uchiha clan massacre – Jūzō integrated the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist in Kirigakure before joining the organization. In this period, he acquired the giant and deadly sword Kubikiribōchō, capable of regenerating from the iron he obtained in the blood of his victims.
His reputation distinguished him only for his inhuman brutality. In Akatsuki, he was extremely loyal to Pain, demonstrated professionalism in his missions, and always sought to work in harmony with his partner. Fueling a growing hatred of his homeland, he hated having to fulfill a mission in the Land of Water.
Extremely skilled and violent, Jūzō was a great user of kenjutsu. In addition, he was a user of Water Release, a technique through which he created clones of water and a dense fog, which could be used to his advantage in battle.
What is Akatsuki
Nagato (Pain), Yahiko e Konan, fundadores da Akatsuki
Although Akatsuki gained more recognition in their second lineup – the anime’s second part’s main antagonist – the organization got off to an extremely different start. Created by Yahiko, Nagato and Konan, Akatsuki had the original goal of achieving peace, putting an end to the wars that raged Amegakure.
Yahiko’s death, however, and the manipulation done on Nagato would completely change the group’s objective.
Akatsuki’s Secret Goals
Under Nagato/Pain’s leadership, Akatsuki was made up of mercenary ninja, who received payments to try to stop wars in villages. In order to gain money and reputation, however, it was Akatsuki itself that secretly caused these wars which they were then paid to stop.
In this period, Pain’s real objective was to gather all the tailed beasts. In this way, he could make Akatsuki a shinobi force so intense that it could win wars immediately and thus intimidate nations into starting any other conflicts. However, there was another objective secretly at work during this period, being carried out without Pain’s knowledge.
From the beginning of the second Akatsuki formation, Obito Uchiha, under the identity of Tobi , manipulated Nagato into having him capture the nine tailed beasts. His, and his master Madara’s, real goal was to recreate the Ten-Tails, the personification of Kaguya Ōtsutsuki. To do so, they would utilize the tailed beasts’ chakra in conjunction with the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path.
Obito manipulated Yahiko and Nagato into getting Akatsuki where it did. But the one who started the manipulation of everyone, in fact, was Black Zetsu. The creation of Akatsuki, with its different purported goals, has always been Black Zetsu’s plan, to use the nine tailed beasts as a way to bring Kaguya Ōtsutsuki back. It was for this purpose, even, that he was created by her.
The members of the 1st formation
In addition to Nagato (before becoming Pain) and Konan , already detailed above, the 1st Akatsuki lineup had:
Alongside Nagato and Konan, Yahiko was one of the founders of Akatsuki. Leader of the 1st formation, he was the strongest representative of the group’s initial objective: to achieve peace and prevent new wars in Amegakure. Like Naruto, Yahiko dreamed of one day becoming the leader of his village or even the world, always with the goal of making all wars stop.
But that’s not to say that Yahiko’s methods of achieving his goals were peaceful. One of the Ame Orphans – children who lost their parents in the Second Shenobi World War – Yahiko trained with Jiraya for three years, and did not measure consequences to achieve Akatsuki’s goal.
Yahiko ends up dying in the ambush of Hanzo, ruler of Amegakure. After his death, his body was incorporated into the Six Paths of Pain , a technique devised by Nagato. Through this, he was able to use his friend’s body as a vessel, taking on the identity of Pain.
Yahiko was able to use Water Release techniques, such as the Wild Water Wave, through which he projected a strong jet of water from his mouth. Also, as the Deva Path , it provided Nagato/Pain with the ability to control the rain.
As one of the Six Paths of Pain – considered the strongest of them – Yahiko’s power was also manifested by the ability to repel or attract objects. The Chibaku Tensei technique creates a sphere of energy that attracts all matter around it.
One of the first warriors to join Akatsuki – in addition to its three founders – Daibutsu has always been strongly dedicated to the organization’s primary goal of achieving world peace.
Daibutsu realizes that the meeting with Hanzo, leader of Amegakure, is an ambush for Nagato and Yahiko. He and other members try to get to the location to alert and help them. However, they are intercepted by Tobi and Zetsu. The duo’s plan was for Nagato to undergo a traumatic event to awaken his Rinnegan for good, and to leave behind the peaceful goal of the 1st Akatsuki formation.
Tobi and Zetsu manage to kill Daibutsu and the other members present, achieving their goal and even joining the second Akatsuki formation, which would be led by Nagato after becoming Pain.
Daibutsu was able to use Water Release, utilizing his chakra to create giant bubbles that could trap opponents in a sort of water prison.
As a child, Kyūsuke was more aggressive and, alongside other classmates, constantly stole food from villages for a living, after leaving Amegakure to escape Hanzo’s tyranny. When older, he joined the 1st Akatsuki formation, always showing himself to be very reserved, but very dedicated to Yahiko and the organization’s purpose.
Kyūsuke became responsible for promoting Akatsuki and its ideals. He was by Daibutsu’s side on the way to the meeting with Hanzo, to warn Nagato and Yahiko about the ambush. He fought with his teammates when they were intercepted by Tobi and Zetsu. Kyūsuke dies in the battle, along with the other members of the 1st Akatsuki formation.
He was known as “Slightfoot Kyūsuke” for being able to move extremely fast, which gave him an advantage in battle. In addition, he combined the natures of fire and earth chakra and created lava ninjutsu. Through the Lava Release: Lime Freeze Technique, he manages to expel a large amount of lime from his mouth.
The last member of the 1st Akatsuki formation, Kie has always shown loyalty to Yahiko and the organization’s purpose.
Little else is known about the warrior, who was with his Akatsuki colleagues when they were stopped by Tobi and Zetsu from alerting Nagato and Yahiko about the ambush. He died in battle.
Kie’s powers are unknown.
What does the Akatsuki symbol mean?
Akatsuki members could be seen always wearing black uniforms, with dark capes in which only a red cloud stood out. The image symbolized the rain of blood that had long fallen on Amegakure, a symbol for the tears and lives lost there due to the Third Shinobi World War.
When younger, founder and first leader Yahiko commented on his dissatisfaction with the fact that it always rained in Amegakure. With the outbreak of the war, he linked the phenomenon with the sadness of his country, stating that all his nation would do was cry, and that he would one day stop the rain in Amegakure.
For this reason too, the literal meaning of “Akatsuki” is “dawn”.
What do the rings that members wear mean
Another important symbol used by Akatsuki members are rings. They indicate their netnaija and position within the group, although it was unclear what each element represented in the rings exactly means in terms of hierarchy in the team. Altogether there are 10 rings with the following symbols and colors:
- “Zero” (零, king) / purple-gray: used by Pain, on the right thumb.
- “Blue” (青, ao, shō) / teal: worn by Deidara, on the right index finger.
- “White” (白, bya) / white: used by Konan, on the right middle finger.
- “Scarlet” (朱, shu) / red: Used by Itachi Uchiha, on his right ring finger.
- “Boar sign” (亥, gai) / green: used by Zetsu, on the right little finger.
- “Sky”, “empty” (空, kū) / slate blue: worn by Orochimaru, on the left little finger.
- “South” (南, nan) / Yellow: Used by Kisame Hoshigaki, on the left ring finger.
- “North” (北, hoku) / dark green: worn by Kakuzu, on the left middle finger.
- “Three” (三, san) / orange: used by Hidan, on the left index finger.
- “Gem” (玉, gyoku) / purple: worn by Sasori and later by Tobi, on the left thumb.
