The current “Yonkou” (or “Yonko”) or “Four Emperors” are Charlotte Linlin, Kaido, Shanks, and Marshall D. Teach. These captains earned the reputation of being the most powerful pirates in One Piece. And that’s not just for his physical powers, but also for his influence throughout the Grand Line, ruling the New World. The Yonko are even part of the so-called “Three Great Powers”, the three largest military forces in the oceans, along with the Navy and the Seven Warlords of the Sea.

Shanks (the Red)

Shanks was the first Yonko featured in One Piece and plays an important role in the protagonist Luffy’s trajectory. In addition to being the pirate who inspired a young Luffy to dream of a life in piracy, Shanks lost his arm to save the boy, and gave him the straw hat that became his strongest symbol. It was also his crewmate, Lucky Roux, who found the Gomu Gomu no Mi, which Luffy would accidentally eat.
Shanks is known for his upbeat and fun personality, being seen several times partying with his crew. His charisma makes even important figures like Dracule Mihawk party with him. On the other hand, he follows a complex code of moral conduct and overcomes any obstacles to defend someone he considers a friend. He is a pacifist by nature, getting into fights usually just to defend his friends or prevent injustice.
His influence in the pirate world and his diplomacy skills are seen throughout the anime, such as when he put an end to the Battle of Marineford simply by appearing. Furthermore, his bounty is $4,048,900,000. The reunion between him and Luffy is one of the most anticipated moments in the anime, and Shanks proudly follows the pirate’s progress from afar. After Luffy’s actions against Big Mom, he stated that the Straw Hat Pirates’ captain was almost ready to meet him again.
Powers
Although with a strong reputation for his physical powers and influence, Shanks’ fighting skills were not often addressed in the anime. However, it is known that he was once able to stop Whitebeard’s spear thrust with only his sword and the only arm he has (after losing the other to save Luffy as a child).
Even the extremely powerful Marshall D. Teach the Blackbeard – one of the other four Yonko and holder of 2 Devil Fruits – believes he is not yet ready to defeat Shanks, aware of what a great warrior he is. Among his known skills are:
- Swordsmanship : He is an extremely skilled swordsman, having already participated in legendary duels against Mihawk.
- Haki: according to Eiichiro Oda, author of One Piece, Shanks has the most powerful Haki in the anime, being able to cause the fainting of all the inhabitants of an island by imposing his will, for example.
Marshall D. Teach (Barba Negra)

Surely one of the strongest pirates in One Piece , Teach began his journey in the Whitebeard Pirates crew. However, he left the group after killing Thatch to obtain his Devil Fruit. When he was still only seen as one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea, he defeated and handed Ace over to the Marines. The title Emperor/Yonkou he received after killing Edward Newgate, Whitebeard, during the Marineford War. He also defeated all of the White Barbara pirates during the story time jump.
It was from the body of his former captain Whitebeard that Teach acquired the powers of his second Devil Fruit, becoming the only person on record to have two Devil Fruits. His actions also earned him the reward of $2,247,600,000 .

Charlotte Linlin (Big Mom)

Charlotte Linlin is matriarch of the Charlotte Family, which consists of her 46 sons and 39 daughters. She was once part of the crew of the Rocks Pirates, and is the current queen of Totto Island. Her main objective is to form a utopian society in which all races can live together in peace. However, she spares no effort or spares destruction to get where she wants to be. No wonder, the character is the main antagonist of the Whole Cake Island Arc , the second antagonist of the second half of the Wano Country Arc , and one of the central antagonists of the Four Emperors Saga .
Extremely strong since birth, she was abandoned by her biological parents when she was just 5 years old due to the destruction she caused without intention or control. She was taken in by Mother Carmel at Sheep’s House orphanage. She was even Mother Carmel, from whom she inherited her Devil Fruit, after accidentally eating, without realizing it, her foster mother and her orphanage mates when she was 6 years old.
During her time with the Rocks Pirates, she fought Gol D. Roger and Monkey D. Garp, and was responsible for giving Kaido a Devil Fruit, something she says left him in her debt. Years later she formed her own crew and gained great influence. Big Mom is known for being extremely vain, proud, ambitious, childlike, selfish and violent, and wants to become the Pirate Queen. Her bounty is $4,388,000,000 .
Powers
Big Mom relies on her influence in the pirate world and the respect and fear she instills in her opponents. Over the years, she has built an extremely powerful team, uniting her children with other pirates of great power and influence, and forming connections with other important families.

Main antagonist of the Wano Country Arc and one of the central antagonists of the Four Emperors Saga , Kaido shared the beginning of his trajectory as a pirate with Charlotte Linlin, in Pirates Rocks. After Big Mom gave him the Uo Uo no Mi, he acquired the power to transform into a dragon. From there, he started his own crew, the Beasts Pirates. His dream is that, one day, all members will have the power to transform into animals.
Violent and extremely confident, he shows apathy and boredom with everyone around him and a contempt for what happens in the world. Always sullen and moody, he wants to start the biggest war in the world just in search of chaos and excitement. And his physical resources collaborate with his nature. With superhuman stamina, Kaido has already been captured and tortured 18 times by the Marines, who have tried to execute him 40 times. The mere contact with the pirate’s skin broke all the weapons they tried to use against him. In a mixture of overconfidence and boredom, Kaido developed a hobby of trying to kill himself.
The strongest of the four Yonko, Kaido has the highest bounty of any pirate alive. Worth $4,611,100,000, his bounty is the 3rd largest in history, behind only Whitebeard and Gol D. Roger’s bounties. Like the other Emperors, his power goes beyond his incredible physical abilities. As governor general (captain) of the Beasts Pirates, Kaido has authority over over 20,000 pirates. In addition to his alliance with Orochi, he has the cooperation of thousands of Wano country’s samurai forces.
Powers
Kaido has gigantic size and strength and an apparent inability to die. This earned him the title of “World’s Strongest Creature”. This classification puts him even above monsters, giants, animals and any other being. Among its physical resources are:
- Superhuman Abilities : Strength, Speed, Durability, and Stamina
- Haki: is one of the few people on record capable of using all three forms of Haki.
- Uo Uo no Mi, Model: Seiryu: Gave him the ability to transform into a giant Azure Dragon, either entirely or into a human-dragon hybrid. When in his beast form, he can fly, create storm clouds, and breathe blasts of fire.
Edward Newgate (Barba Branca)

Like Big Mom and Kaido, Edward Newgate, Whitebeard, was part of the Rocks Pirates crew, led by the mighty Rocks D. Xebec. After the death of his captain, he assembled his own crew, which came to be made up of important names in piracy, such as Portgas D. Ace, Marco “The Phoenix”, Jozu Diamante and Marshall D. Teach (Blackbeard). The multiple scars he had, in fact, were the result of the many times he was injured to save the lives of his fellow pirates.
During his career as a pirate, he earned a reputation as “the strongest man in the world”. Furthermore, he was seen as the one who would be closest to reaching the One Piece treasure, after Gol D. Roger’s death. His extreme strength, his influence in the world of piracy (he once led over 1600 pirates) and his potential to become the next Pirate King earned him a bounty of $5,046,000,000, the second highest in pirate history.
An ally of Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates’ crew, Whitebeard looked up to the captain. Her respect grew as she witnessed Luffy’s feats. Whitebeard eventually died during the Marineford War when he led his crew to fight alongside Luffy. He was murdered by Blackbeard, who would later take his title as Yonko/Emperor.
Powers
His superhuman strength is one of his main characteristics, even in his advanced age and in his delicate state of health, being often seen surrounded by nurses. His resistance to pain is another highlight, having sustained wounds from 267 sword blows, 152 shots and 46 cannonballs during the Marineford War alone. A brilliant leader, he was also known for his strategic mind.
- Gura Gura no Mi: The fruit gave him the ability to generate shock waves and earthquakes. Add to that his natural strength, and Whitebeard was capable of causing violent waves of air with just one blow.
- Murakumogiri: Whitebeard was the wielder of one of the 12 Ultimate Swords, being extremely skilled with it.
- Haki: He was one of the few people on record able to use all three forms of Haki.
Is Luffy the Fifth Emperor?
After the events of the Whole Cake Island arc , the world felt the consequences of the Straw Hats’ actions against Big Mom, which caused a meeting of the world council, made up of 50 leaders from over 170 nations that are affiliated with the World Government. In this period, the World Economy News Paper made reference to Monkey D. Luffy as the “Fifth Emperor” of the sea, suggesting that the pirate already had a power comparable to the other Yonko.
To date, many leading figures in the world of piracy and world government believe that the newspaper has been ahead of the curve. For them, Luffy is still not on the same level as Linlin, Shanks, Kaido and Blackbeard. On the other hand, at the end of the Pirate Alliance Saga , seven crews of pirates swore allegiance to Luffy. The large group volunteered to fight by his side at any time, forming the so-called Straw Hat Grand Fleet, with a total of 5640 members .
