Kimetsu no Yaiba , or Demon Slayer , introduced us to a world in which demons often threaten the lives of humans. To face them, the Demon Slayer Corps organization gathers and trains the most courageous demon hunters. And at the head of the entire organization are the 9 strongest and most powerful fighters among all hunters: the Hashiras .
Also known as ” Pillars “, each Hashira has a specific breathing style (power) and is tasked with patrolling a region, protecting it, and gathering information about demons. In addition, some of them act as teachers or mentors to hunters-in-training. In the anime, the 9 Pillars were only briefly introduced, so the information below may contain SPOILERS for the manga.
Giyu Tomioka
Category: Pillar of Water
Age: 21 years old
Birthday: February 8
One of Sakonji Urokodaki’s pupils, former Water Pillar and trainer of demon hunters, Giyu Tomioka is the current Water Pillar in the Demon Slayer Corps. Like his master, he has mastered Water Breathing , a style through which he is able to gain strength and agility by increasing the amount of oxygen present in his blood.
With this power, he can deliver blows with a flow and flexibility similar to those of water, and he also has different combat and defense techniques developed from this breathing style. In all, Sakonji taught him 10 forms (techniques) of Water Breathing. But Giyu developed an 11th on his own. In addition, Gyiu still has:
- Superhuman physical capabilities: enhanced strength, speed, and reflexes
- Demon Slayer Mark: Like the other Pillars (and Tanjiro), Gyiu is able to wake up his Demon Slayer Mark, which manifests as a watermark-like design on his face. When the mark is activated, your speed, accuracy and stamina are significantly increased.
Past
As a child, Gyiu lost his older sister, who sacrificed herself to protect him from a demon. No one believed the way she died, and the young man was seen as mentally ill and sent to live with a medical relative. However, he runs away during the journey, and almost dies in the midst of the dangers of the mountain he passed through. But he is rescued and becomes an apprentice to Sakonji Urokodaki.
During the final selection for the Demon Slayer Corps, his best friend protects him and later ends up dying. Gyiu carries this weight for a long time and later on develops an insecurity when he deserves his position as Pillar of Water. It is Tanjiro Kamado , protagonist of the anime/manga, who helps him to overcome this inferiority complex and to continue training.
Relationship with other characters
First Hashira to be introduced, Gyiu appears in the first episode of the anime. After protagonist Tanjiro Kamado discovers that his village and almost all of his family have been massacred by a demon, the boy has to deal with his younger sister, Nezuko, who has been transformed into a demon. That’s when Gyiu shows up to help him. As one of the Pillars and a trained hunter, Gyiu attempts to kill Nezuko, but is stopped by Tanjiro.
Eventually, he believes that Nezuko retained her human nature even after the transformation. To help Tanjiro, Gyiu writes a letter to his master Sakonji. In the message, he explains the boy’s situation and asks Sakonji to train him. Over the course of the anime, Gyiu develops a brotherly relationship with Tanjiro, and returns to defending the Kamado brothers when necessary, even if it puts his own life at risk.
Shinobu Kocho
Category: Insect Pillar
Age: 18 years old
Birthday: February 24
Current Pillar of the Insect, Shinobu has a conflicted personality. Overall, she seems like a calm young woman with a smile always on her face. But for all the loved ones she has lost to demons, she carries a constant rage with her. Unlike the other Hashiras, Shinobu does not have superhuman physical abilities, however she is a hunter as powerful as her Demon Slayer Corps colleagues due to her extensive medical and pharmaceutical knowledge.
Shinobu is capable of producing powerful poisons and antidotes. Her fighting style is Insect Breath , developed by herself from Flower Breath. In this style, Shinobu uses sword strikes to simulate movements of different insects and lethal stings. In this way, she can inject her poisons into the opponent. Some of her creations are (spoilers below!):
- Aging Stage: This drug can make the enemy age 50 years in one minute. Against a demon, it can be of great use, as when she uses it on Muzan for 1 hour and manages to age him 9,000 years, which slows down the King of Demons.
- Human Conversion Stage: Through a team study with Tamayo, Shinobu collaborated on the creation of a drug that can turn demons back into humans.
Past
Shinobu is the younger sister of Kanae Kocho , former Hashira da Flor, now deceased, and adopted older sister of the young Kanao Tsuyuri, also a hunter of the Demon Slayer Corps. She had a good childhood with a loving family. Unfortunately, her parents end up being killed by demons in front of her and her sister. The girls end up being saved by Hashira Gyomei Himejima. From there, the two dedicate themselves to becoming demon hunters.
Now older, the sisters found a young girl being enslaved and decided to help her. After releasing her, they adopt the girl, named Kanao Tsuyuri. They take their adopted sister to Solar da Borboleta, a place that welcomes hunters to help them recover from injuries and give them time and space to train. Kanae was master of the Manor, until she was killed by a demon at age 17. Since then, Shinobu has taken over as master at age 14.
From then on, she went on to train Kanao to be a hunter. Furthermore, she began grooming her as her Tsuguko* , her eventual successor as the Insect Pillar.
*There are three ways to become a Hashira. The first one is to kill 50 demons. The second is to kill a member of the demon group Twelve Demon Moons, led by the King of Demons. And the third is to become a Tsuguko, exceptional members of the Demon Slayer Corps who are personally appointed and trained as successors to the Pillars.
Relationship with other characters
Despite his kind and seemingly happy personality, Shinobu keeps aloof from the other Hashiras. Though she doesn’t show it, she carries a constant anger towards the demons, due to the losses they’ve already caused her. Despite this, she is understanding of Tanjiro and his sister Nezuko’s plight, helping them when possible and even welcoming them to the Butterfly Manor.
This stance on the Kamado brothers even made her and Gyiu bond a little more. The only person she has a really close relationship with is her adopted sister Kanao, whom she blindly trusts. Eventually he also comes to trust Tamayo, admiring her talents as a scientist and working with her in creating poisons and antidotes.
Sanemi Shinazugawa
Category: Pillar of the Wind
Age: 21 years old
Birthday: November 29
A past full of trauma and loss made Sanemi an aggressive, cold and isolated man, with his goals turning only to fighting demons without any form of mercy. He possesses a rare blood type capable of attracting demons and intoxicating them with the desire to feed. In addition, he possesses the ability to manipulate his muscles to the point of being able to avoid or close deadly wounds.
Masters Wind Breathing , a style derived from Sun Breathing, with which Sanemi is able to create and control gales and tornadoes through violent sword swings that use the surrounding air. In all, he performs 9 different forms of his fighting style. In terms of battle resources, it also has:
- Enhanced Physical Abilities: Superhuman strength, speed, reflexes, and stamina
- Demon Slayer Mark: Like the other Hashiras, when Sanemi activates her Demon Slayer Mark, it magnifies all of her physical resources. The mark even allows him to access the Subconscious Fight technique, through which his body continues to fight even when he is unconscious.
Past
Sanemi’s aggressiveness and solitary personality are explained by the terrible traumas that marked her past. In addition to having to deal with an abusive father during his childhood – who was later murdered – he watched as his mother was turned into a demon and killed nearly all of his seven siblings. To save her younger brother, the only one who still survived the massacre, Sanemi killed her own mother.
After that, Sanemi leaves Genya behind and dedicates herself to hunting demons as best she could, with various weapons. Eventually, he meets the hunter Masachika Kumeno, who helps him with training and accompanies him in battle against the demon Kizuki, one of the Twelve Moon Demons. Though they manage to defeat him, Masachika dies in the process, and an embittered Sanemi becomes the Hashira of the Wind.
Relationship with other characters
Sanemi is reunited with her younger brother Genya in the Demon Slayer Corps, which the young man joins as a new hunter. The relationship between the two remains strained, as Genya has also become bitter and distant. He still believes that Sanemi killed his mother for no reason, as she was very young when it all happened and didn’t realize that she had been turned into a demon. In the course of history, however, the relationship of the brothers takes new steps. Also, Genya becomes more sociable after getting closer to Tanjiro and his friends.
Aside from Kagaya, master of the Hashira for whom Sanemi has deep respect, he doesn’t have a close relationship with anyone. But he seems to develop an enmity with Gyiu and Tanjiro. Although they are peers like Pillars, Sanemi and Gyiu have opposite personalities and never got along very well, which was only made worse by the fact that Gyiu defended the Kamado brothers’ plight. At the Hashira meeting on the subject, Sanemi teased Nezuko with her blood for not believing the girl would be harmless to humans. It was the young woman’s resistance at this point that made everyone accept her stay with Tanjiro.
Mitsuri Kanroji
Category: Pillar of Love
Age: 19 years old
Birthday: November 29
Hashira of Love, Mitsuri is looking for him. One of her biggest dreams is to find a husband, and the young hunter joined the Demon Slayer Corps motivated to find that love. However, she proves to be up to her job in many other ways, both through her always gentle and emotional personality and her skills as a hunter. Mitsuri has superhuman strength due to the density of his muscles being 8 times greater than normal. Her difficulty in finding a husband, in fact, lies in the fact that she demands that her suitor be stronger than her.
To get an idea of the skill level of the young hunter, just know that she only trained for 6 months before completing the Final Selection for the Demon Slayers Corps. Additionally, Mitsuri created her own fighting style, from Breathing Flame. Taking advantage of her incredible flexibility and strength to combine attacks that have whiplash-like effects, she developed the Breath of Love . It also has:
- Demon Slayer Mark: After successfully awakening his mark, Mitsuri further increased the level of his physical resources, such as strength, accuracy, and endurance.
- Flame Breathing: Although she doesn’t show the same dexterity with this technique that she has with the Breath of Love, she was trained in this style, traditional in her family.
Past
Mitsuri’s dream of finding a husband stronger than her has an origin. As a child, the girl already demonstrated unbelievable strength, and her physical build made her feel the need to eat much more than usual. Furthermore, she has an unusual hair color. All this caused her to be seen as different, being excluded in several situations and abandoned by her potential fiancé at 17 years old.
After this trauma, she still tried to adapt to what was considered normal, hiding her strength, her hunger and the color of her hair, but she didn’t want to live that way. When she met Kagaya, leader of the Hashiras, she was motivated to join the Demon Slayer Corps and to be who she really was.
Relationship with other characters
Mitsuri always shows kindness to everyone and admires the different forms of love. Not only does she accept the Kamado brothers’ plight, she likes young Nezuko—even though she’s part demon—and admires the love Tanjiro constantly shows for her sister. She also cultivates a friendship with Shinobu, the Insect Hashira.
His closest friendship within the Demon Slayer Corps, however, is with Obanai Iguro , the Pillar of the Cobra. Completely in love with Mitsuri, Obanai does everything he can to help and protect her, and doesn’t feel good enough for her friend, who doesn’t seem to understand Hashira’s feelings.
Obanai Iguro
Category: Pilar of the Cobra
Age: 21 years old
Birthday: September 15
Strict, demanding, and with some unrealistic expectations for the new hunters of the Demon Slayer Corps, Obanai holds the position of Hashira da Cobra. Because he is partially blind, he has the company of his snake Kubaramaru, who helps him by reading the opponent’s attacks and reporting them to him. In addition, young Pilar developed his own fighting style, Cobra Breath.
Developed from Water Breathing, Obanai’s technique is performed with a katana whose wavy shape allows him to deliver blows with movements similar to those of a snake. In all, he created 6 forms of Cobra’s Breath . Among his other physical abilities and powers are:
- Enhanced physical features: superhuman strength, speed, reflexes, and stamina.
- Tactical Mind: It is able to accurately analyze the opponent’s abilities and movements
- Demon Slayer Mark: When activated, Obanai’s Mark increases his physical abilities significantly and gives him access to other resources, such as the Transparent World, with which he was able to quickly visualize all 12 of the Demon King’s vital organs.
Past
Obanai is yet another Hashira to bear the marks of an extremely traumatic past. Born into a clan that worshiped a snake-like demon, he grew up trapped in a cell. As a child, he would see his relatives handing over humans as sacrifices to the demon, while they enriched themselves by stealing the goods of dead people.
At age 12, the boy came out of his cell for the first time, only to meet the snake demon face to face. Dedicated to waiting for him to grow taller before devouring him, she has cut her mouth almost to his ears so that it resembles his. Back in his cell, now with his wound under a bandage, Obanai was determined to flee, with only a small snake for company that approached him.
Followed by the demon as it fled, the boy was eventually saved by Kyojuro Rengoku , the then Hashira of Flames. Since then, he has dedicated himself to becoming a hunter and fighting as many demons as he can, but he carries with him a sense of impurity in his blood, from the deeds of his family.
Relationship with other characters
With a temper, Obanai initially seemed to view Gyiu Tomioka and Tanjiro Kamado as if he hated them. This was compounded by Obanai following a very strict code regarding demons and consequently not agreeing with Nezuko Kamado’s situation. However, the relationship between the two gradually improves and Tanjiro gains the respect and even the protection of Obanai.
Cobra’s Hashira is also completely in love with Mitsuro Kanroji , the Pillar of Love. Although he is extremely protective of the young girl, he doesn’t try to get over their friendship and the two maintain it. This is because he considers himself unworthy of Mitsuro’s love, for having his blood dirty by the acts of his family. This insecurity and this code of honor are so strong that he believes he has to die defeating the Demon King and reincarnate to finally deserve to be with Mitsuro.
Gyomei Himejima
Category: Pilar da Pedra
Age: 27 years old
Birthday: August 23
Hashira of the Stone of the Demon Slayer Corps, Gyomei was one of the hunters that stood out for the short trajectory he had to become one of the Pillars, having achieved the position just 2 months after becoming a hunter. In addition to having superhuman speed and stamina, young Hashira is probably the strongest member in the entire organization.
Visually impaired since childhood, Gyomei developed his hearing to an unbelievable extent, being able to hear the smallest sounds, like a demon’s body recomposing itself. This skill gives you great advantage in battle. His fighting style is Stone Breathing. Derived from Breath of the Sun, this style consists of a set of strokes that simulate land features. To fight, Gyomei uses a flail and an axe. It also has:
- Demon Slayer Mark: In addition to amplifying his already incredible physical abilities, the mark, when activated, allows him to use the Transparent World technique, with which he can see a perfect image of his enemies despite his visual impairment.
- Weapons: Unlike most Hashiras, Gyomei does not use a sword, but an ax and flail made of the same metal as Nichirin Blades. In battle, he uses the noise of his flail chain to direct the movements of his weapons.
Past
Overcoming blindness and the desire to help people had accompanied Gyomei since he was young, even before he was aware of his strength. As a boy, he lived in a temple where he took care of nine orphaned children, and protected them as best he could. For this, he made a barrier with Wisteria incense, which prevented the demons from approaching. Unfortunately, one of the boys disobeyed Gyomei’s instructions to stay inside the temple, and ended up being cornered by a demon.
To save himself, the young man gave the lives of everyone in the group in exchange for his own, breaking the barrier and letting the demon in. In an attempt to defend the children, Gyomei discovered his true strength. However, the massacre could not be stopped and due to a misunderstanding, the young man ended up being accused and imprisoned for the death of the children. Before he is executed for the crime he didn’t commit, Kagaya Ubuyashiki , leader of the Demon Slayer Corps, intervenes and wins his freedom.
Although the trauma made it difficult for him to trust anyone, Gyomei remained kind and sensitive. Furthermore, he continued as a man of faith, frequently offering prayers to others, and always believing that everyone has the potential to do amazing things if given the opportunity.
relationships with other people
In addition to his respect for Kagaya, Gyomei has earned Shinobu’s admiration and gratitude for saving her and her older sister Kanae from a demon many years ago.
The relationship with Tanjiro, on the other hand, didn’t start in the best way. At first, Gyomei thought the young man was weak and obsessed with a demon, not understanding the relationship between the boy and his sister Nezuko. However, throughout the story Tanjiro earns Hashira’s respect both with his growth as a hunter and with his character and concern for everyone else.
Tengen Uzui
Category: Pilar do Som
Age: 23 years old
Birthday: October 31
The eccentric and flamboyant Tengen is the Hashira of Sound. Being of shinobi (ninja) origin – although he has left behind his family’s philosophy of life – he has great resistance to the vast majority of poisons. Another physical feature he has is his greatly enhanced hearing, being able to hear minute noises even underground.
His fighting style, Breath of Sound , was developed by Tengen himself from Breath of Thunder. Through the so-called “Score formula”, he is able to read the enemy’s movements, deconstruct them into sound and thus analyze their rhythm and choose which different blows can be most effective. In addition, he fights by trying to generate large amounts of sound in order to overpower his opponents. It also has:
- Echolocation: From his incredible hearing, Tengen is able to locate battles through the resonance in the air, the almost imperceptible vibrations that can be propagated through different environments.
- Small Anti-Demon Bombs: Made with a special gunpowder, these bombs are used by Tengen at the same time he uses his sound abilities to ensure that no humans get hurt.
Past
Born into a shinobi clan, Tengen underwent absurd training and mistreatment by his father, which resulted in the death of seven of his eight siblings when he was just 15 years old. The massacre was motivated by the patriarch himself. After years of severe training, he had the brothers kill each other without them knowing who killed whom. Their father still raised them with the mindset that he could dispose of innocent lives for his own benefit, and that a wife’s only use was to produce offspring.
After realizing that his only living brother already followed this mentality, Tengen leaves his clan, determined to follow the opposite path of everything his father taught him. As an adult, Tengen is a kind and honorable man—though he confuses some people with his playful attitudes—and who puts his life last in the priority of who he must save in battle. His priority is always to protect his three wives and other innocents.
Relationship with other characters
Tengen’s initial relationship with new hunters such as Tanjiro and Zenitsu was not very good. Zenitsu judged him for his flamboyant and seemingly carefree manner, sometimes clashing with Hashira. Tanjiro, in turn, was also annoyed with some attitudes of Pilar do Som, who was not even in favor of the situation of the Kamado brothers.
However, over time, Tengen realizes Tanjiro’s skills and principles. At one point in the story, the two fight together against an opponent and try at all costs to protect each other. In addition, Tengen is more willing to accept Nezuko’s presence, even though the young woman is a demon. At one point, Nezuko surprises Tengen by helping to clean the poison from his body with her Demon Blood Art technique.
Kyojuro Rengoku
Category: Pillar of Flames
Age: 20 years old
Birthday: May 10
Kyojuro is the son of Shinjuro Rengoku, a well-known demon hunter and former Flame Hashira in the Demon Slayer Corps. From a very early age, the young man trained with his father, studying the Flame Breathing style instruction book. This made him reach great levels in this fighting style very early on.
Also derived from Sun Breathing, Flame Breathing is performed from powerful blows that simulate the effect of fire. To get an idea of the power of this technique, its 9 forms can be used to move even heavy objects like trains, being potentially deadly against opponents. It also has:
- Enhanced Physical Abilities: Superhuman strength, speed, reflexes, and stamina.
- Tactical Mind: During his training with the former Hashira of Flames, Kyojuro gained access to the combat knowledge and tactics of generations of the Rengoku family.
Past
In addition to being the son of the former Hashira das Flames, Kyojuro also relied on his mother to pass on the moral code that he follows even as an adult. According to this code, those born strong have a duty to protect the weak.
Relationship with other characters
Kyojuro was against the Kamado brothers’ situation initially. However, during the Mugen Train arc – adapted into the first Kimetsu no Yaiba film – the two were able to get to know each other better and get closer. The respect he has for Tanjiro is such that Kyojuro offers to make the young hunter his Tsuguko, that is, to train him to be his successor as Hashira.
The new friendship also caused him to change the way he saw Nezuko Kamado. Kyojuro even states that all those who protect humans from demons are part of the Demon Slayer Corps, which would be the case with the girl.
Among the Hashiras, the person Kyojuro was closest to was Mitsuri Kanroji, the Pillar of Love. Kyojuro mentored Mitsuri, being always strict but patient with the girl, who developed her Breath of Love style directly from her mentor’s Breath of Flames.
Muichiro Tokito
Category: Pillar of the Mist
Age: 14 years old
Birthday: August 8
Muichiro’s reserved manner and young age may make Hashira underestimated by opponents, but the truth is that the young hunter is one of the strongest pillars of the Demon Slayer Corps. A testament to this is the fact that he earned his position as Hashira just two months after starting his training as a demon hunter.
His fighting style is Breath of Mist , a technique derived from Breath of Wind in which Muichiro delivers blows with his sword capable of disrupting the enemy’s senses and even altering their perception of the surrounding environment, while striking them in other ways. In addition, it has:
- Enhanced Physical Abilities: Superhuman strength, speed, reflexes, and stamina.
- Demon Slayer Mark: In addition to enhancing his physical abilities, Muichiro’s mark, when activated, gives him access to the Transparent World technique, a kind of kinetic vision capable of visualizing muscles, blood flow and even the smallest movements of his opponents.
Past
Muichiro’s aloof and reserved demeanor can be explained by his extremely painful past. When they were just ten years old, Muichiro and his twin brother Yuichiro lost their parents. His mother died of bronchitis. Her father died in an accident while traveling to get medicine for her. Despite all the suffering, Muichiro maintained his father’s gentle personality. Yuichiro, however, assumed an apathetic and indifferent manner, although he still cared for his brother.
Sometime later, the twins were recruited into the Demon Slayer Corps by Amane Ubuyashiki, wife of Kagaya Ubuyashiki, but Yuichiro pushed her away in every attempt. A few months later, they end up being attacked by a demon. Muichiro manages to kill the enemy, but Yuichiro ends up dying in his arms after seriously injuring himself in an attempt to protect his brother.
The trauma ends up causing Muichiro to lose his memories , which causes his new indifferent personality along with a constant anger he feels, although he doesn’t know why. However, he uses it to fight the demons relentlessly.
Relationship with other characters
Muishiro didn’t have a very good relationship with Tanjiro in the beginning, but that completely changed over time. After Pilar realizes the young hunter’s attitude and principles, and especially after Muishiro eventually regains his memories, the two become friends. It is even possible to notice a certain favoritism of Muichiro with Tanjiro during Hashira training.

From the beginning, he was in favor of the Kamado brothers’ plight, being understanding of Tanjiro’s arguments about his sister Nezuko keeping her human nature even after being turned into a demon.
