Disbanding NYSC is like scrapping the Army – Former Camp Commander

By Justina Asishana, Minna

The call for the scrapping of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in some quarters is tantamount to scrapping the armed forces, a former Camp Commander, Rtd. Captain Hassan Mohammed has declared.

Mohammed, who served as the NYSC Camp Commander in Akwa-Ibom, Rivers and Abuja, said the NYSC strengthens the unity of Nigeria and has helped to transform the nation in the last 48 years.

Mohammed, who is now Chairman of Agaie Local Government Area of Niger State stated this during the Niger State NYSC 2021 Batch A, Stream 2 Cultural Carnival in Paikoro.

“I disagree with those calling for the scrapping of the NYSC. We know how the scheme has helped in transforming the unity of the nation. Calling for the scrap of the NYSC is just like calling for the scrapping of the army because NYSC fosters peace in Nigeria.”

The Niger State NYSC Coordinator, Mrs Fumilayo Ajayi said the theme of the cultural carnival is Unity Carnival which showcases that the unity in Nigeria is sacrosanct and should not be compromised.

Ajayi explained that NYSC preaches and promotes unity, “NYSC and its corps members want to showcase and tell Nigeria that we are one and our unity keeps us strong.”
