Gangnam style celebrates 10 record-breaking years on YouTube

“Gangnam style” , the popular song by South Korean rapper Psy , today celebrates 10 years since it became the first video on the YouTube platform to exceed 1 billion views.

The song , released five months earlier, was intended to be a product aimed exclusively at the South Korean public, but ended up becoming a global viral phenomenon and one of the milestones of the “Hallyu” phenomenon , the so-called wave of South Korean popular culture.

After surpassing Justin Bieber ‘s “Baby” at the end of November 2012 as the most viewed video in Internet history , the song by Psy , whose real name is Park Jae-sang , took just 24 more days to add almost 200 million views -reaching almost 75 views per second worldwide- until surpassing the 1,000 million mark.

The humor that exudes the song, which mocks those who seek to imitate the lifestyle linked to the exclusive district of Gangnam , in Seoul , or its choreography, which includes the famous “horse trot” step, are some of the keys of the frenzy that unleashed this cute cut.

The video, posted on YouTube the same day the song was published, on July 15, 2012, now has more than 4.627 million views.

The success of the 2012 video for “Gangnam style ”, in which singer Hyuna also appears , opened the door for many K-Pop groups to use the Google-owned website to promote themselves around the world.

Blackpink, the female band founded in 2016, are right now the perfect example of this trend, since they are the musical group with the highest number of subscribers (more than 83 million) on YouTube.

For his part, Psy, about to turn 45, this year released his new studio album, “Psy 9th”, which includes collaborations with big names in South Korean pop such as Suga from BTS , Sung Si-kyung, Heize, Crush , Tablo and Hwasa from the girl band Mamamoo.
