The director plans to come to grips with the cartoon after the new feature film. Director Guillermo del Toro , who recently received another nomination for an Oscar for the cartoon ” Pinocchio “, shared the news about his next animation project. In an interview with The Telegraph, the creator of “The Shape of Water” and “Pan’s Labyrinth” said that his new cartoon, made in the technology of frame-by-frame puppet animation, should be an adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s fantasy novel “The Buried Giant” (2015).
Del Toro had long planned an adaptation of this work, but was forced to postpone this project due to being busy. According to the cinematographer, he is currently writing the script with Dennis Kelly (Utopia, Matilda). Despite the fact that the work is progressing, before the director plans to shoot another feature film:
“My next stop-motion film will be Kazuo Ishiguro’s adaptation of The Buried Giant, which I’m currently working on with Denis Kelly. In about two months, we will start designing. But before I take on this project, I will shoot my new feature film. In the meantime, we are developing a lookbook, and in about two years, if, of course, everything goes well, full-fledged production will begin.”
The action of the literary source takes place in medieval England during the reign of King Arthur, and the elderly spouses Axel and Beatrice are in the center of the story. The main characters have not heard from their son for a long time, so they go to look for him in a neighboring settlement. The problem is that a mysterious fog has covered everything in the area, because of which people lose their memories and, accordingly, their connection with the past.
Del Toro is set to begin filming for the as yet untitled live-action film sometime in August this year.
