Tron 3 is back in Disney’s plans. According to Deadline, a new sequel to the franchise is being planned by the house of Mickey Mouse. The site also reported that the new title should be starring Jared Leto and directed by Joachim Rønning (Maleficent: Mistress of Evil).
The site also informs that the agreement between the talents and the company has not been finalized. Under the title of Tron: Ares, the film would be the direct sequel to the 1982 and 2010 films.
In 2022, director Joseph Kosinski explained to Vulture that the third title in the franchise (probably) would not happen due to Disney’s acquisitions of Marvel and Star Wars.
“By 2015 [when the script was finalized], Disney was already different. When I made Tron: Legacy, they hadn’t bought Marvel. They hadn’t bought Star Wars. Tron was the best fantasy, sci-fi play that they had,” he explained at the time.
The name of the sequel to Tron: Legacy would be Tron: Ascension. Kosinki explained that the film would show an inversion of the premise of the previous ones – instead of humans entering the video game, it would be the video game that would start to “leak” into the real world.
Released in 2010, Tron: Legacy starred Jeff Bridges, Garrett Hedlund, Olivia Wilde and Michael Sheen. Directed by Kosinski, the film grossed $400 million at the worldwide box office.
