Box office receipts for theaters around the world are up 27% in 2022. Last year’s total take was $25.9 billion , according to research firm Gower Street Analytics (via Variety ).
When it comes to dominant markets, China has lost its place to North America. According to Comscore , the United States accounted for $7.5 billion of the annual sum. This represents a value 65% above the 2021 data.
Analysts reported that 2022 brought China’s lowest financial total for cinemas in 11 years.
Latin America showed the biggest gain compared to 2021, with an 87% increase at the box office . The amount was US$ 1.8 billion in this region.
Overall, the top 10 international markets for the film industry in 2022 were:
- China ($4.3 billion)
- Japan ($1.5 billion)
- United Kingdom and Ireland ($1.2 billion)
- France ($1.1 billion)
- South Korea ($0.9 billion)
- Germany ($0.8 billion)
- Australia ($0.64 billion)
- Mexico ($0.63 billion)
- Spain ($0.4 billion)
- Brazil ($0.35 billion)
India is excluded from this ranking as there is no full results tracking in the country.
The 2022 numbers are still 35% below the averages between 2017 and 2019, which would represent an annual loss of $14 billion in gross revenue. Of course, this owes a lot to the Covid-19 pandemic, which has wreaked havoc on the global film industry.
